Polarity Composite: An Average of Personal and Collective Fields

You have probably heard it said that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. The people around you affect your outlook and energy, and yours affects theirs as well. This concept resonates because it is a valid one, and it extends well beyond five people.

Where you live, your family, friends, coworkers, and faith-based community (to name a few) — each of these is a “collective,” and each carries its own polarity (outlook) that contributes to yours. The combined average of the polarities across every collective you are part of, plus the polarity of your mind, body, and spirit (your personal average), is what we call your polarity composite.

Personal Polarity Average (Mind + Body + Spirit) + Collective Influence = Polarity Composite

The Mechanics of Polarity

It may feel like polarity is something you simply choose — a declaration you make once and then carry forward. And in one sense, that’s true: the polarity you choose does matter deeply, but your actual polarity at any given moment is something more dynamic than a single decision. Your personal polarity is a living average — the cumulative result of every choice you make across your mind, your body, and your spirit, continuously, over time. And it is shaped by far more than just your own choices.

This parallel between electrical energy and consciousness is what the personal polarity average is modeled on: the greater the charge on either pole, the greater the potential to do work. The same principle applies to polarity in a human being. The more meaningfully polarized you are, the greater your capacity to create real change in yourself and in the world around you. A weak or scattered charge — in either direction — means insufficient voltage to do the work. Committed polarization is what generates the kind of current that moves things.

Think of it like a pH scale — positive polarity is the alkaline end, negative polarity is the acidic end. Neither is a moral judgment. They are simply directions on a scale, and everything you do either raises or lowers where you land.

Your Personal Polarity is a Living 3-Layer Average

What makes this more complex — and more interesting — is that you are not a single magnet with one polarity. You are a layered electromagnetic system, with your mind, body, and spirit each contributing their own field to a total signature. Your personal polarity is the average across all three layers, and every part of that system counts.

1. Mind

The first layer is your mind — your thoughts, beliefs, assumptions, and the mental patterns you run (consciously or not). Elevating your thought, intentional perspective choices, and the practice of seeing clearly all raise the average of this layer. Fear-based (constricted) thinking, chronic self-criticism, and distorted beliefs lower it.

2. Body

The second layer is your body — and this one surprises people, because it has nothing to do with appearance. It is about whether you are loving your physical frame. Giving it rest. Hydrating it. Nourishing it. Moving it in ways that support its vitality. Expressing gratitude for its faithful support of you. Creating an environment that allows it to settle and thrive. The body is a sacred part of your energetic system, and how you tend to it directly affects your overall average. You can be deeply spiritually intentional and still have your average lowered by an unloving relationship with your physical frame.

3. Spirit

The third and final layer is your spirit — your connection to Source and your awareness of oneness (which tends to deeply affect your polarity). Practices that raise this layer include choosing oneness over separation, assuming positive intent, and returning to love when you have drifted toward fear. What lowers it is choosing separation, clinging to beliefs that no longer serve rather than releasing and transmuting, or leaving shadow material unexamined in the dark.

All three layers together produce your personal polarity average — your actual polarity signature in any given moment. You are an integrated system, and every part of that system contributes to the whole.

How Collective Fields Affect Your Average

But your electromagnetic field is shaped not only by your internal states but by the external energetic fields (collectives) you are embedded in at all times — some nested inside one another, others overlapping. As we discussed earlier, you are simultaneously sitting under multiple collectives, each with its own polarity average, and each of those is contributing to your field whether you are consciously aware of it or not.

As a parallel, if you imagine a piece of bread being soaked in liquid — what it is soaked in deeply matters. Soaking it in cream makes it rich (albeit heavy on the fat), while soaking it in hot sauce produces something entirely different. Both are possible choices — they simply produce different results. The collectives in this example are the liquid, while you are the bread. What you are sitting in affects your overall quality immensely.

But what does it actually mean for a collective to have its own polarity? Every collective develops a shared worldview — a corporate average of the beliefs, assumptions, and values held by the people within it. That shared worldview has a polarity charge, just as an individual’s does. And it is constantly being shaped by what the collective is consuming — the news it is watching, the entertainment it is absorbing, the narratives being repeated and amplified across the culture. When those inputs skew heavily toward fear, scarcity, or separation, that charge gains momentum across the entire collective. And anyone embedded in it is swimming in that current whether they are aware of it or not.

This also means when a collective you are part of shifts its polarity significantly — especially if it moves in a different direction than your own — you are now swimming against a stronger current, and maintaining your personal polarity average requires more intentional effort. Conversely, when it aligns with yours, it bolsters you in the direction you have already chosen.

A point of caution is that some of those collective fields carry distortions so normalized within them that they become invisible to the people inside. The distortion does not register as static. It registers as reality — as simply the way things are. And that invisibility is exactly what makes it worth examining.

Collective Distortion: An Example

One of the clearest places to see this at work is in how women are taught to relate to their bodies.

For generations, women across multiple cultures have been absorbing a collective message about the female body:

  • that it exists as a visual object — to be looked at, evaluated, and admired
  • that it exists as a sexual object for the pleasure of others
  • that it is expected to perform endlessly — as caretaker, homemaker, professional, and still find time to maintain the appearance standard
  • that its value is determined by how closely it conforms to an ever-shifting standard
  • that the standard is always just out of reach — there is always something to fix
  • that its worth is contingent on how it is received, not on how it is lived in

That message shapes how she understands and relates to her own body, long before she is old enough to question it. The result is that many women carry a lower polarity in their body layer that has almost nothing to do with their own choices and almost everything to do with the collective stream they were formed inside.

This is what makes loving your body a genuinely countercultural act. Your polarity average does not read what is visible on the outside — it reads whether there is love present or not. A woman in a smaller body running on stress and self-criticism contributes less to her physical polarity average than a woman in a larger body who is well-rested, well-nourished, and at peace with her frame. What the polarity average reads is love — or the absence of it.

Recognizing that the messaging is not yours — that it came from a collective stream you were swimming in long before you had the tools to question it — is what makes it possible to shift. You cannot change what you cannot see. And seeing it is the first movement toward clearing it.

The Ripple Effect of a Rising Average

When your average rises, it does not stay contained to you. Every collective you are embedded in is shaped by the individuals within it. When one person shifts — when they begin genuinely loving their physical frame (body), choosing unhindered thought over constricted fear-based patterns (mind), or choosing oneness over separation more consistently (spirit) — that shift raises the average of every collective they are part of.

This is why personal spiritual work is never only personal. Every shift you make — in any of the three layers — ripples outward through every collective you are part of. Love raises, and it spreads.

Actionable Insights

  • Audit your three-layer average honestly. Where is your mind right now — unhindered or constricted? How are you tending to your body — with love or with neglect? Where is your spirit oriented — toward oneness or separation? You do not need all three to be perfect. You need to see clearly where the average is being lowered so you know where to direct your attention.
  • Name the collectives you are swimming in. Identify the streams you are currently embedded in — geographic, familial, ideological, cultural. Ask honestly: what is the polarity average of each one? Are there streams whose distortions you have been absorbing as if they were truth? Naming them is what makes it possible to distinguish their charge from your own clear signal.
  • Look for the distortions that feel like reality. The most powerful collective distortions are the ones that do not feel like distortions — they feel like facts. If there is an area of your life where you carry a persistent, automatic critical voice, ask where that voice came from. Is it yours — or did you absorb it from a collective stream?
